Trade Show-Ready Wearable Battery Pack

Motivo developed and produced this wearable, flexible battery pack prototype from concept to finished prototype in only 8 weeks in order to be ready for the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The pack looks just like a normal shoulder strap except for its indicator lights and USB port, and is capable of charging an iPhone 5 times over.

Power Electronics Development

Motivo develops and integrates custom power electronics for a variety of challenging applications. Ranging from 600V motor controllers to advanced EMI filters, Motivo has the capabilities to develop key components for revolutionary systems.

Particular areas of expertise include high-power, high-voltage (e.g. 750VDC) on-vehicle systems, high speed (>100kHz) control systems, and implementation of advanced algorithms on conventional hardware. In-house system, circuit, and thermal simulation capabilities enable Motivo to quickly and efficiently solve the coupled thermal, mechanical, electrical, and controls challenges inherent in power electronics development. Bring us your power electronics problem and we will help you find the solution.

Custom Battery System Development

Motivo has over 15 years of experience and knowledge in the development of mechanical, electrical, firmware, and software solutions for custom battery systems.

Motivo has developed a wide variety of battery systems, from hybrid vehicle battery packs to 5kWh utility peak shave units and 1MW industrial backup power systems.

Motivo’s innovative engineering solutions have been prototyped and validated. Motivo can also support low volume builds of these systems and can support the transition to volume manufacturing. Our knowledge of battery management systems allows us to design and build up robust and field-deployable battery systems in months.

15kWh Battery Pack Design and Build

Motivo designed and built a 15kWh battery pack for an electric vehicle. The pack was designed to replace an existing battery solution in a very limited packaging volume. Motivo also integrated a BMS solution and designed the electrical harness to integrate the battery pack into the existing vehicle. The complete solution was designed, tested and integrated into the vehicle in two months.

2-Speed Gearbox

Motivo designed a custom electric motor and gearbox combination to serve the Class 3-5 medium-duty truck segment.
The integrated solution features a Remy HVH250-115P electric motor and a 2-speed gear box with an electrically actuated parking pawl and electronic shifting.

Leaning Electric Trike

Motivo took an existing proof of concept design by a Silicon Valley startup and created a pre-production design that met the customer's performance and cost targets. The development included suspension design, structural design, body panel design and fabrication, variable geometry test hardware, and test instrumentation and analysis.

Hossak Suspension

Motivo has designed and built a long travel mountain bike front suspension. The radical design eliminates binding during travel. Suspension geometry has been optimized to significantly reduce brake dive while maintaining bump compliance.

High Performance Electric Drivetrain

Motivo developed a high performance 210kW continuous pure electric drivetrain with a 70kWh battery pack system that is liquid cooled, rechargable in under 5 hours, and constrained to in an extremely tight package volume.
The system has successfully completed the design validation phase

EV Taxis in NYC

Motivo was engaged to study the technical issues and cost implications of rolling out battery electric vehicles (BEV) as taxi cabs in New York City. Motivo looked at a number of factors including the usage profiles and monetary considerations of cab drivers and operators. The final report also laid out a strategic plan for the roll out of BEV taxi cabs and the preliminary requirements such as charging infrastructure that need to be in place for BEV taxi cabs to replace the existing taxi cabs.

Lighting System for Portable Shelters

Motivo developed a robust, lightweight, easily packable, simple system that provides light, but not heat, to achieve superior illumination efficiency for temporary shelters. Motivo’s SOLR (Spectrum Optimized Lighting Replacement) Illumination System is designed to make efficient use of available daylight while avoiding increased heat load to the shelter. This will enable significant reduction in both direct fuel usage for illumination and indirect fuel usage associated with the thermal loading of the current inefficient illumination technology.

Our Unique Approach

Based on a decade of past experience, Motivo has developed an effective process for building and managing great engineering teams, capable of working together efficiently to solve complex engineering problems. Some of the unique aspects of the Motivo approach are encapsulated below.

Business Processes - All our processes are optimized towards project efficiency. This affects how we recruit, purchase materials and even our IT policies.

Recruiting – We look for people with a passion for engineering and the mindset to work as a part of the team, people who are constantly willing to challenge themselves, who can design at a system level and can also work on the details. Each member needs to have a strong understanding of the engineering fundamentals and take immense pride in their work.

Training – We train our newest team members in the Motivo way of thinking, with guidance in how to approach problems, choose a solution path and interact with the rest of the team. Each team member is given both responsibility and freedom in the design process.

Teamwork - Our engineering teams are battle-hardened, having worked on numerous challenging projects together. Each member is encouraged to take on different roles on different projects to broaden their experience.

System Responsibility - Each engineer is responsible for the system from concept to customer hand off. The engineer maintains awareness of how their designs perform and is responsible for solving any problems of the design.

Multi Disciplinary – A mechanical engineer needs to be aware of the electrical requirements and constraints and vice versa. All our team members are multidisciplinary.

Real World Experience - Each team member understands what it takes to design and build a robust and reliable system that meets customer requirements. Our engineers also play a role in the assembly and testing of their systems and this experience translates into their design.

Detail Design - A cool concept is only 20% of the engineering effort, the other 80% of the effort is in ensuring that the concept translates into something that can be built and assembled while still meeting the cost, performance, and schedule targets. Motivo prides itself on designs that can be implemented in the real world, which we emphasize by building the first prototypes and testing them to ensure they meet the customer requirements.
